I called the police, Gave them both the make/model and tag, and was told that it was never reported stolen and not to worry. But run Carfax on the tag, and it’s registered to a 2003 F250. So I got back to the Decatur, GA police and this time they told me it’s out of their jurisdiction anyway. So yeah. I might call the county police next, but this is frustrating. You would think that they would express at least the slightest bit of interest in this, considering I did all the work for them in locating this car and all they need to do is go get the VIN and find the owner. Even if it’s not in their jurisdiction, at least don’t just brush it off as nothing, you know? This was a pretty nice car and is still likely worth 5 figures even with the damage, so somebody’s gonna want it back.

Recovering stolen cars or plates doesn’t generate revenue.

Did you get the names of the officers you spoke to?
When you phone the county police. Make sure you tell them why your speaking to them and who you spoke to previously at the other departments.

I wish I did.
Still, the important thing here is to get someone’s property back, so at least that can still happen.

If you gave the location, they’ll probably send someone out next chance they get.

If the plate was off a Dodge Ram it could have been my brothers, he’s had 4 plates stolen off his Alabama truck while parked in Atlanta. According to the APD police officer that pulled him over it happens all the time as car thieves like to use out of state plates on stolen cars to thwart license plate readers.

Did you give them the VIN? The F250 owner went to the DMV said his plate was stolen, they issued a new one and forgot about it. If you only gave the registration number they find that F250 guy still has his truck and forget about it.

You should find the owner and offer your services as a PI in finding his car!

It’s a Chrysler 200. Do the owner a favor and give up so that they can get the insurance payout and buy a car that doesn’t suck.

Meh it’s probably insured.
Work in a body shop and we do a fair amount of theft recoveries. You don’t want a stolen car back.

I wouldn’t waste any more time on it just leave it to law enforcement and the owner of the car.

When you put 2AF4776 Alabama into CarFax, it traces to a 2015 Chrysler 200 Limited. That’s what it is.

I have the CarFax app on my phone. But yes, pretty suspicious to see a wrecked 200 from Mobile (2 county=Mobile), which is 350 miles away from the Gwinnett area.
